A man who booked me in my first year taught me the most useful thing I know and he has no idea he did it.
He said, near the end of a perfectly ordinary evening, that the thing he had actually paid for was not having to be interesting. He had spent his whole day being interesting at people. He wanted an hour where nothing was expected of him conversationally.
I think about that constantly. It changed how I run the quiet parts of a booking, and it is the reason I no longer fill silences that do not need filling.
He never booked again and I hope he is well.
